Terrance Plowright

Brief background:

Born in Sydney, 1949. Terrance has undertaken some of the largest fine art commissions in Australia.
He has large sculptural works in Bangladesh, New Zealand and his 2000 Sydney Olympic Sculptures now resides in New York, throughout the USA, Singapore, Paris, Tokyo, London etc and all States throughout Australia. This particular work raised almost 2 million dollars for the Olympic Athletes.
The Paramatta relief mural, which stands 22 metres high, 16 metres wide and 0.6 of a metre deep, at Westfield Shopping Centre is one of Terrance’s major contributions to Sydney.
His large sculptural works, some over 11 meters in height, are created in cast bronze, stainless steel, stone, glass, water, etc.. 5 cast bronze figures have just been installed at Echo Point in the Blue Mountains and stand over 3 metres in height.
In addition, he has recently completed a 6 metre high, contemporary cast stainless steel sculpture, weighing around 5 tonnes, installed at Twin Waters in Queensland.
Terrance has designed and built many water features, one over 50 metres in length for the Deutsche Bank Headquarters in Sydney and his “Dancing Brolga Fountain” at Cockle Bay is famous world wide and features as one of Sydney’s major icons for Singapore Airlines.
Terrance has also explored the potential uses of Water Clear Cast Urethane, and was one of the first in the world to use this material artistically, creating a full size clear cast figure as well as a key work for Sydney University.
In 1985 Terrance was selected as one of two Australian artists to represent Australian Glass Artists at Craft Expo held in Sydney.
In 1986 One of Terrance’s major stained glass works was unveiled by the Governor General of NSW Air Marshal Sir James Rowland at the Garrison Church, The Rocks in Sydney.
In 1990 Kangaroo Press published a book "Stained Glass Inspiration and Design" on Terrance’s Glass and Sculptural works. The book was launched by Mrs. Hazel Hawke, the wife of Prime Minister Mr Bob Hawke and went on to sell-out three editions.
In 1991, Terrance was invited by the Geneva Headquarters of the World Council of Churches to be artist/sculptor in residence where his sculptural works created during the three week conference, were televised to over 120 countries.
In 1995, a bronze sculpture of Mamma Leana MBE was unveiled by the then Federal Minister for Immigration, Phillip Ruddick.
1998 Terrance designed and built his first, and now famous major water feature, the “Dancing Brolga Fountain” at Darling Harbour
.
1999 Terrance won a competition to design and create the main Olympic Auction Sculpture.
2002 His Tribute to the Mining Community, a larger than life size bronze is unveiled by the Premier of NSW, Bob Carr.
2003 Terrance is selected to design and create one of the largest cast bronze figurative works in Australia, “The Convict Memorial”.
2004 Terrance is awarded the design and build contract for a huge water feature at the new Deutsche Bank Headquarters in Sydney. This work is 50 metres in length.
2007 Convicts unveiled by the Australian President of Rotary in the presence of Bob Debus who was NSW Attorney General, also, the then sitting Federal Liberal Member and Chief Government Whip for the lower house, Kerry Bartlett and other dignitaries
.
2007 Terrance was invited to create a major cast bronze work (larger than life) for the Sydney Cricket Ground. This is a figure of Richie Benaud a respected figure in the field of cricket, internationally. He was unveiled by the New South Wales Governor General, Marie Bashir.
2007 a larger than life size statue for Wollongong Council, a surf lifesaver. This is a cast in bronze, celebrating the Centenary of Surf Lifesaving in Australia. Also, a 7 metre high x 6 metres wide stained glass window for the Holy Family Chapel in Sydney was also completed.
2008 Terrance finished and installed a 3 metre cast bronze figure of Sir Henry Parkes for the City of Parkes, NSW. Also completed was a new Stone, Stainless Steel and Bronze Cenotaph for Honour, for Penrith City Council/Penrith RSL.
2009-2011 Five figures Richie Benaud, Trevor Allan, Stan McCabe, Reg Gasnier and Steve Waugh were created and installed at the Sydney Cricket Ground and the Sydney Football Stadium.
2010 major work for the Waverly City Council, Bondi Junction, 4m high 2000 piece, stainless steel scuplture.
2011 currently working on a major sculpture for the priemiers department.

Currently based at Wentworth Falls in the Blue Mountains near Sydney, the large studio, which Terrance built, is set on 2 acres of bushland.

Terrance has now worked in fine arts for 25 years. He also studied Film Editing with the Australian Broadcasting Commission, was lead singer and rhythm guitarist in “Centres of Gravity” and “Sweet Earth” and studied music, privately at the Sydney Conservatorium. In 1976 he founded the “Awareness Centre” in Sydney as well as teaching and lecturing on “Potential of the human spirit”. With a background and deep interest in music, philosophy, science and the relationships of living forms, I work on developing themes that endeavour to reveal the interconnectedness and innate intelligence of all life, as well as the profoundly powerful and beautiful nature of existence.

2011: Vietnamese Boat People Memorial. Bronze sculpture including four 3/4 life-size figures and boat. Memorial for the estimated 500,000 Vietnamese who perished at sea in voyages from Vietnam. Bankstown City Council. Unveiled by the Mayor, Councillor Khal Asfour, President of the NSW Chapter of the Vietnamese Community in Australia, Thanh Nguyen, and Tania Mihailuk, MP.

2011: “Robert Rowell”, Larger than life-size cast bronze portrait sculpture. Derby, WA.

2011: “Life Teeming/Life Teaming”, Major sculptural commission for Waverly Council. Contemporary stainless steel work, made of over 2000 pieces with LED lighting. 4m High Cnr Hollywood Ave & Waverly St, Bondi Junction, Sydney.

2010: Six Contemporary Sculptures exploring the Arts and Sciences. Cast water clear polyurethane and sequenced lighting. Commissioned by The Sellers Group.

2010: “Awakening Flower of Peace”, Contemporary work of stainless steel. Gough Whitlam Park, Sydney. For Canterbury Council.

2010: “Life From a Suitcase”, Nine Bronze larger than life size figures of Signorelli family members, celebrating immigration to Australia. Pyrmont Wharf, Sydney. Unveiled by Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir, AC CVO Governor of NSW. Also present: Kristina Keneally, Premier, Neville Wran & Morris Iemma, past Premiers and Barry O’Farrell, Leader of the Opposition.

2008 to 2011: SCG Sports Figures Project, 2.2 m high, cast bronze. Selected by the SCG Trust and arts critic Henry Mulholland to create 5 larger than life-size cast bronze figures. (Richie Benaud, Stan McCabe, Reg Gasnier, Trevor Allen, Steve Waugh) Richie Benaud sculpture unveiled by Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir, AC CVO Governor of NSW. Sydney Cricket Ground, NSW.

2005: “Flowering Streams”, 5 m high, created from stainless steel plate, weighing 2 tonnes. 18 nozzles, hydraulics hidden inside, main central sculpture suspended. The Entrance, NSW.

2005: “Ekshonge” (together), 3.3 m high, stainless steel with cold cast aluminium coating. C.R.P. hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh.

2005: “Mirrored Stillness, Dancing Streams”, 50m water feature, 4 x granite plinths, 8 x 1.5m submersible pumps, 1 major 38 kVA water wall pump, 5 variable speed drives, computer, 98 nozzles, LED lighting. Deutsche Bank Headquarters, Phillip St, Sydney.

2004: “Three Sisters Dreamtime”, seven cast bronze Aboriginal figures, all around 2 m high. Life size Pit Pony and Welsh Miner, cast bronze. Scenic World Katoomba, NSW.

2004: “Wings Of Spirit”, 6 m high, cast 316 stainless steel, Twin Waters, QLD.

2003: “Relationships”, 3.3m high stainless steel plate contemporary figures. Part of a water feature. Kellyville, Sydney NSW.

2002: “Cobar Miner”, cast bronze 1¼ life size memorial for the mining community, Cobar N.S.W. Unveiled by Bob Carr, State Premier.

2001: “Aqua-helix”, 11 m high stainless steel sculpture, Henry Deane Plaza, Lee St, Sydney.

2000: Selected by Sydney Olympic Committee to design/create sculptural auction piece for Sydney Olympics. Stainless steel, cast glass and solid cast silver; 500 pieces raised $1.72 million for the athletes.

1998: “Dancing Brolgas Fountain”, Cockle Bay, Darling Harbour, Sydney. Twelve cast 316 stainless steel Brolgas, 1.6 m high. Spiral water feature, lighting, fibre optics.

1996: “From Light; Water”, 16 m high x 6 m wide, 250mm deep mural in relief. Crushed granite, crushed coloured slab glass and coloured concrete. St George Private Hospital, Sydney.

1996: “St Bernadette’s,”, 240 square m stained glass, painted, etched and fired works. 2 sculptures, all the sacred furniture, made from marble and timber inlay, Castle Hill, Sydney.

1995: “Mamma Leana MBE”, Bronze. Unveiled by Federal Minister for Immigration.

1994: “Nurturing-Nature-Profoundly Infinite”, 22 m high x 16 m wide relief mural, weighing 8 tonnes, Parramatta, N.S.W.

1993 - 1998: “Gordon Uniting Church,”, 12 stained glass windows, 1.2m x 3.2m, painted & etched.

1992: “Connection”, 3 m high stainless steel sculpture, Auckland Airport, NZ.
